Ella hunches over her study desk, the September evening heavy with the hum of cicadas outside her window.

The thud of footsteps racing down the hall snaps her upright, followed by the slam of the front door.

A cold chill snakes up her spine, sharp and urgent.

“Helana,” she whispers, her heart lurching.

“Something’s wrong with my Helana.” She jams on her shoes and bolts downstairs, nearly colliding with Aileen as they sprint across the yard.

Helana stands by the street, her phone pressed to her ear, her face pale under the streetlight’s glow. “I have to get to the hospital,” Helana says, her voice trembling.

“He’s hurt.

I have to go.” “Who’s hurt?” Aileen asks. “Bobby Miller,” Helana mumbles, trance-like.

“He’s dying.

I have to be there.” “How do you know?” Aileen presses. Ella shoots her a look.

“You know how she knows.” Mr. and Mrs. Danvers rush out, their faces etched with concern.

A sleek government car screeches to the curb, Commander Beaker at the wheel, Melanie in the passenger seat, and Patricia in the back. “You’re all going to the hospital?” Mr. Danvers asks.

“I’ll grab the car.” “It’s in Virginia,” Beaker says.

“We’re taking the jet.

We don’t know details, but it’s critical to Helana.

Girls, you’re coming too.” “When are you back?” Mrs. Danvers asks, her voice tight. “A day or two,” Beaker says.

“I’ll call with updates.

If the girls need clothes, we’ll handle it in Virginia.” The car speeds off, leaving the Danvers standing in the dusk, bewildered. --- ### The Hospital The Virginia hospital’s ICU is sterile, its air thick with antiseptic and quiet beeps.

A nurse blocks the girls at Bobby Miller’s room.

“Family only.

Wait outside.” A woman in her 40s bursts out, her eyes red, and envelops Helana in a fierce hug.

“They’re family,” she sobs.

“Let them in.” Inside, Bobby lies unrecognizable, his face bandaged, wires and tubes snaking from his comatose form.

The girls huddle close, their bond a silent shield. A physician pulls Beaker and Melanie aside.

“He was on his motorcycle, hit from behind by a drunk driver.

He slid under a truck and was run over.

His body’s crushed, with severe brain damage.

He’s in a deep coma, on life support to give family time to say goodbye.

He likely won’t last the night.” Helana kneels beside Bobby, clasping his hand, her eyes closed in meditation.

The room feels smaller, heavier. “How’d you know Helana?” Ella asks the woman. “I’m Janet, Bobby’s mom,” she says.

“I knew her the moment I saw her.

Bobby’s talked about her nonstop since moving here for officer training.

He hasn’t dated, said he was waiting for Helana to grow up.

He sees her in dreams.

That’s why I knew she’d come.

She can reach him, even now.” “I thought she’d forgotten him,” Aileen says.

“It’s been a year.” “Their connection’s deeper than I realized,” Ella says, her voice soft.

“She’s kept a place for him in her heart, and he for her.

I misjudged him.” An hour passes, Helana unmoving, her presence a quiet anchor.

Patricia kneels beside her, wrapping her arms around Helana’s shoulders.

“She’s with him now,” Patricia whispers.

“I feel it.

When he leaves, she’ll follow a little way.

I’ll go too, to guide her back.” Janet kneels at Bobby’s other side, holding his free hand.

A sudden chill sweeps the room, prickling Ella’s skin.

The monitors’ steady beeps falter, then flatline.

The nurse notes the time of death: 3:15 AM. “You feel that?” Aileen asks, her voice trembling. “The cold, the emptiness,” Ella says, her chest tight.

“Helana and Patricia are gone.

It hurts.

I hope they’re back soon—I can’t bear this much longer.” An hour creeps by, Helana and Patricia still as statues.

The hospital staff, respectful, gives them space.

Finally, their eyes flutter open, exhaustion carving their faces.

Ella and Aileen help them to chairs, fetching water. “How long were we gone?” Patricia asks, her voice faint. “An hour,” Ella says. “It felt like a day,” Patricia says.

“I had to pull her back.” Janet approaches the nurse.

“You can take what’s on the bed.

That’s not him anymore.” As staff unplug the machines, Janet kneels at Helana’s feet, clasping her hand, her head resting in Helana’s lap.

Helana stares blankly, as if only half-present. In the hospital chapel, dim with candlelight, the group sits in silence, grappling with grief.

Helana and Janet hold hands, their bond palpable.

Helana speaks, her voice raw.

“Janet, that’s your name, right? Bobby told me.” “You spoke with him?” Janet asks, eyes wide. “We talked about our destiny,” Helana says, tears falling.

“We were meant to be together, me as your daughter-in-law, but darkness betrayed that.

He asked me to care for you.

We never bonded physically, but our spirits are one.

If you’ll have me, I’ll be your daughter.” Janet pulls Helana close.

“From the moment Bobby spoke of you, you were my daughter.

I accept you.

For now, let me care for you.

You can care for me in 30 years.” --- ### The Hotel The hotel room in Virginia is a haven, dawn’s light creeping through the curtains on this late September morning in 2025.

Ella, Aileen, and Patricia curl up on one bed, Melanie on another, her presence a steady comfort. “Thanks for staying with us, Melanie,” Ella says.

“We couldn’t be alone tonight—or this morning.” “Always here for you,” Melanie says. “Do we know about the drunk driver?” Aileen asks. “He was at the hospital,” Melanie says.

“Beaker spoke to an officer.

The driver remembers going to bed, nothing after.

Woke up in his car, crashed.

Maybe a sleeping pill causing sleep-driving.” “Could it be mind control?” Ella asks. “Why suspect that?” Melanie asks, her brow furrowing. “Helana told Janet, ‘destiny was betrayed by the darkness,’” Ella says.

“Our security detail monitors us and our families, but we bonded with Helana at the deepest level and didn’t know she still loved Bobby.

Someone—or something—knew her better than us and targeted her by hurting him.

That terrifies me.” “It terrifies me too,” Melanie says.

“If we’d known about Bobby, even in dreams, we’d have protected him.

Helana’s staying with Janet to handle Bobby’s affairs and the funeral, so Janet’s on the list now.

If this ‘darkness’ is paranormal, our weapons are useless against it.” “Helana’s not coming home?” Aileen asks, her voice breaking. “Not yet,” Melanie says.

“Janet’s moving back to her hometown, where Bobby was training.

Helana will join her.” “Janet can borrow Helana, but she’s ours,” Ella says fiercely.

“She can’t have her.” “Mine too,” Aileen says.

“Roxana called—nightmares all night.

I updated her.

She’s praying for Helana.” --- Ella sits on the hotel bed, the room quiet save for the hum of the air conditioner.

At 6:00 AM EST on a late September day in 2025, she scribbles on hotel stationery, her heart raw.

Dear Diary, I’m writing on hotel paper—I’ll tuck this in when I’m home. Today was heartbreaking.

Helana’s true love, Bobby, died.

She followed him to the other side, and we nearly lost her without Patricia to bring her back.

That hour of emptiness was unbearable.

If Helana ever dies before me, I won’t survive—I’ll follow her. Bobby, I’m sorry.

I thought you were a player preying on my Helana.

I didn’t see your love was real.

If we meet again, I owe you a hug.

Helana wouldn’t love you so deeply if you were the guy I imagined. We’re in a Virginia hotel, flying home tonight after rest.

Soon, we’ll attend Bobby’s funeral.

I’ll cry—a lot. Helana’s staying with Janet, who lost a son but gained a daughter.

I need to tell Janet Helana’s mine first.

I’ll share, but never let her go. It’s morning, and I’ve been up all night.

I need sleep, hoping to see Helana in my dreams.

She’s broken—her face isn’t hers anymore.

She needs me, and I need her.

Maybe Bobby will be there too. Good day, Diary.
